For the Guyanese diaspora, finding the real thing used to mean knowing the right person. That is changing.
If you grew up in Guyana or Suriname — or grew up in a household that did — you know the specific frustration of trying to find authentic products in the United States. The supermarkets carry approximations. The specialist Caribbean markets, if there is one near you, carry some things some of the time. And for everything else, you waited for someone to travel back and bring things home in a suitcase.
That system still exists. But alongside it, a small number of businesses are now making it possible to order authentic Guyanese and Caribbean products online and have them delivered across the US. Here is what you can get — and why it matters.
The Quassia bitter cup (Kwasibita)
This is the one that started it all for us — and the one that gets the most messages from customers who had given up hope of finding it in the States.
The Quassia bitter cup is a handcrafted drinking vessel made from the wood of the Quassia tree (Quassia amara), native to Guyana and Suriname. You fill it with water overnight and drink the infusion in the morning. The wood releases natural bitter compounds into the water — a traditional remedy for digestion, liver support, and daily detox that has been part of Guyanese morning routines for generations.
For the diaspora, it is also a piece of home. The smell of the wood, the amber colour of the water, the particular bitterness that no supplement has quite managed to replicate — these things carry memory in a way that is hard to explain to someone who did not grow up with them.
We ship handcrafted Quassia bitter cups in small, medium, and large sizes to all US states. Find them here.
Why authentic matters
There is a version of almost every Caribbean product available in the US — usually a commercial approximation made for a mass market, with the edges smoothed off and the character processed out. Guyanese pepper sauce that is milder than it should be. Coconut sugar that tastes nothing like the real thing. Spice blends that list the right ingredients but in the wrong proportions.
Authentic products are different not because of nostalgia, though nostalgia is real, but because the original versions were developed over generations to do something specific — to taste right, to work right, to carry the cultural weight they were meant to carry. That is not something a commercial approximation can replicate.
It is also worth saying: when you buy authentic Guyanese products from a Guyanese business, the money goes back to the community rather than to a corporation that borrowed the idea. That distinction matters more than it might seem.
What to look for when buying Caribbean products online
Not everything sold as “Guyanese” or “Caribbean” online is the real thing. A few things worth checking:
- Who is selling it? A business run by someone from the community is more likely to source products authentically than a general import operation. Look for a real story behind the brand.
- Is it handcrafted or mass-produced? For products like the bitter cup, handcrafting is not just aesthetic — it is functional. Each cup is cut from natural wood with no treatments or chemicals. Mass-produced versions often use treated or composite materials that change what the product does.
- Can you ask questions? A genuine small business will answer your questions directly. If there is no human behind the contact form, be cautious.
Building the pantry from home
For those in the diaspora who are trying to maintain a Guyanese kitchen and wellness routine in the US, the availability of authentic products is slowly but meaningfully improving. The combination of small businesses shipping online and a growing Caribbean community presence on social platforms is making it easier than it has ever been.
If there are specific Guyanese products you have been searching for and cannot find, we want to hear about it. Our goal at Guyanese Snacks is to make the things that matter to this community genuinely accessible — not just the things that are easiest to ship.
